Finnish politician removed from Finnair flight – “too drunk to fly”

Photo combination of Finnair flight and Tomi Immonen by Iltalehti.

Finnish Member of Parliament Tomi Immonen was on Saturday 11 January 2025 escorted off a Finnair flight to Bangkok because the cabin crew believed he was too drunk to fly. The flight was 1 hour delayed from Helsinki as Tomi Immonen tried to explain to the crew that as a former officer in the Finnish army he was no threat to the safety of the flight.  The departure was scheduled to 20.50 but the flight did not take off until 21.58.

Eventually Immonen suggested the crew should called the police and let them take an alcohol test on board. But the police took him off the flight. On the tarmac, a breath analyzer showed he had 0.78 ‰  alcohol in the blood.

Tomi Immonen explains that he was so persistent because he was escorting another passenger that could not travel alone. He also apologises to all the passengers whose vacation start was delayed by an hour and to the crew for the inconvenience.
