Swedish MEP Jörgen Warborn says a planned EU–Philippines trade deal could remove tariffs on goods where Swedish exporters are strong. He will also help guide the agreement through the European Parliament.
Warborn is Parliament’s standing rapporteur for the Philippines. In a statement on 22 September, he singled out the prospect of zero tariffs on many goods where Swedish export industries are strongest.
The European Commission says the planned deal would liberalise more than 94% of tariff lines. Machinery, transport equipment, medicines, meat and dairy products are among the EU’s current exports to the Philippines.
The EU and the Philippines reached substantial political agreement on 22 September. They still need to complete negotiations and technical details, and Parliament must approve the agreement. It has not been signed or entered into force.
