Malaysian university wins first ever medal at world cheerleading championship in Sweden

Malaysia’s Sunway University became the first Malaysian team to compete at the FISU World University Championship Cheerleading, winning silver in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Malaysia’s Sunway University has made history by becoming the first Malaysian team to compete at the FISU World University Championship Cheerleading, returning home with a silver medal from this year’s competition in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The Sunway University Cheerleading Team claimed second place in the Coed Elite Division. The Malaysian team was up against top university teams from China, Brazil, Hungary and host nation Sweden. The championship was organised by the Swedish University Sports Federation, the Swedish Cheerleading Federation and Gothenburg & Co.

“We are extremely proud and grateful to have won a silver medal for Malaysia as Sunway student athletes,” said team president Nicholas Low Kah Hung. “This achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our coaches and Sunway University.”

The team was given an official send-off at Sunway University before travelling to Sweden, where university leaders, fellow students and supporters gathered to celebrate the historic qualification.

The silver medal marks a milestone for Malaysian university sports, with Sunway becoming the country’s first representative at the international university cheerleading championship.
