Norway participated in the UN Security Council on Mine Action

On 8 April 2021 the Norwegian Embassy released a thank you note, that read:

Congratulations to Vietnam and its newly appointed Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son on the success of the timely open debate at the UNSC on Mine Action.

Congratulations to Ms Dieu Linh Norwegian People’s Aid Vietnam(NPA) Provincial Programme Manager in Quang Tri Province on your strong and thought-provoking speech at the debate. Women have an important role to play in MineAction as well as in the larger peace and security agenda.

Addressing at this debate, State Secretary of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jens Frølich Holte reiterated Norway’s strong commitment to prevent further civilian death and injury from anti-personnel mines, IEDs and explosive remnants of war. “Ensuring the inclusion of women in clearance programmes will benefit both the programme itself and society at large”.

He highlighted the fact that “Some countries with armed conflict have seen a disproportionate increase in casualties due to the use of improvised land mines by non-state actors. There is a pressing need to find ways to counter this deadly trend.” Finally, Jens Frølich Holte called on all countries to join the Mine Ban Treaty and Convention on Cluster Munitions.

Kudos to Norwegian People’s Aid Vietnam / Norwegian People’s Aid Lao PDR ອົງການຊ່ວຍເຫຼືອລ້າຂອງປະຊາຊົນນອກແວ, and their staff members for the great work and contributions to mine action in Vietnam and Laos.
