Norwegian ship designer and builder VARD has opened a new engineering office in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The company plans to grow the team to more than 40 engineers in the coming years.
The office houses the Vard Design and Engineering Vietnam (VDV) Centre. Its engineers work on ship structures, piping, machinery, ventilation and electrical systems, as well as vessel design and stability.
VARD says the expansion will strengthen its design and engineering capacity in Vietnam. It will also support closer cooperation between Vietnamese engineers and colleagues across the company’s international design network.
Expanding its Vietnamese presence
The company says the centre will offer career opportunities for engineers in Vietnam and help teams share technical knowledge and working methods.
VARD is based in Ålesund, Norway, and belongs to Italy’s Fincantieri Group. It already operates the Vard Vung Tau shipyard in southern Vietnam.
In September, ScandAsia reported on a visit to the shipyard by Norway’s ambassador-designate Stein Iversen. The visit highlighted how Norwegian technology and Vietnamese expertise contribute to shipbuilding for international customers.
