Salla Tuominen, President of Zonta International, emphasized that violence remains one of the biggest challenges facing women worldwide during her recent visit to Hong Kong.

Speaking on TVB’s Straight Talk program, Tuominen noted that violence is not limited to physical harm but also includes psychological, financial, and emotional abuse. “Globally, one third of all women have faced gender-based violence,” she said, describing the issue as a “huge problem” that often remains unseen.

Tuominen, who is from Finland, explained that Zonta International — a global organization for women’s rights with over 26,000 members across 65 countries — supports several projects in the Asia-Pacific region. These initiatives focus on combating gender-based violence, addressing child marriage, promoting education, and encouraging local communities to take greater responsibility for gender equality.

She added that the organization also works on projects related to climate change, connecting women’s empowerment to broader global challenges.
