Stockholm-based Lao ambassador takes up additional role in Latvia

Laos’ ambassador in Stockholm, Bounthavy Vilavong, has formally become the country’s non-resident ambassador to Latvia.

Vilavong presented his credentials to Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs at Riga Castle on 24 August.

During his visit, the ambassador also met representatives from Latvia’s parliament and foreign ministry. They discussed bilateral relations and opportunities for cooperation in trade, investment and tourism.

Laos and Latvia established diplomatic relations in 1995.

Vilavong has served as Laos’ ambassador to Sweden since October 2024. Based at the Lao Embassy in Stockholm, he is also accredited to Denmark, Finland, Norway and Estonia.

The Latvian appointment further expands his diplomatic responsibilities in the Nordic and Baltic region.
