A 59-year-old Swedish national died after drowning while swimming at Somprasong Beach in Chon Buri province, Thai police confirmed.

The incident occurred on Sunday 4 January 2026 in the Na Jomtien sub-district of Sattahip district. Officers from Na Jomtien Police Station were alerted at around 1.30pm and arrived at the beach together with rescue workers from the Sawang Rojanathammasatan Foundation.

According to police, the man was found unconscious on the sand while beachgoers and rescue personnel attempted to assist him. Despite prolonged CPR efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deceased was later identified as Swedish citizen Stefan Peter Karlsson. He had been swimming at the beach shortly before the incident.

A close companion told police that the pair had visited the beach to relax and swim. She said Karlsson had consumed beer before entering the sea.

Police collected evidence at the scene and questioned witnesses. The body was transferred to the Institute of Forensic Medicine at Police General Hospital in Bangkok for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Thai authorities have coordinated with the Swedish embassy to notify the man’s family and arrange the repatriation of his body to Sweden for funeral rites.
