A dream vacation to a Thai island paradise quickly turned into a nightmare for a Swedish family, as a four-year-old Swedish boy was injured after walking into a closed glass door at a hotel on Koh Lanta, Thailand. Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported the incident happened on 21 December 2025. The family has only recently decided to open up about the incident.

The boy had arrived with his family two days earlier. His mother, Sarah Hedström, said he did not see the glass door was closed.

A nurse anaesthetist from Stockholm and a Danish firefighter staying at the hotel provided first aid. The boy was taken to a local clinic, then transferred to a hospital in Trang, where he underwent four hours of surgery.

Aftonbladet reported he received 239 stitches and stayed in hospital for several days. The family later returned to the hotel, while the boy continued recovering.

After the incident, other guests reportedly added paper and markings to glass doors to make them more visible. The family plans to remain in Thailand until 10 January 2026.

“Right now we’re taking it one day at a time and focusing on making sure he feels better”, Sarah Hedström told Aftonbladet.
