
A Swedish tourist has been arrested in Phuket after allegedly slapping an Australian tourist once in Patong. Police said the victim fell, suffered head injuries, and later died in hospital, local media reports.
Police said the incident happened on the evening of 25 February outside Siri Land alley on Prachanukhro Road in Patong, Kathu district. The victim was identified as a 58-year-old Australian national.
Rescue workers took the Australian man to Patong Hospital for initial treatment, with a transfer planned to Vachira Phuket Hospital. Police said he was pronounced dead at 10:23pm, after which investigators reviewed CCTV footage.
Police said CCTV showed the Australian man arriving with a woman believed to be his girlfriend before an argument with the suspect. Police said the suspect slapped him once in the face, and Jolliffe fell and lost consciousness.
Investigators identified the suspect as 29-year-old Swedish national Pektus Tugui Tayar, who was staying at a hotel in Kathu district. Police said he admitted striking the victim once and was charged with assault causing death.
