Thai Parliament President meets with Swedish Ambassador

On January 22, 2025, at 2:00 PM, Mr. Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, President of the Thai National Assembly and Speaker of the House of Representatives, warmly welcomed H.E. Mrs. Anna Hammargren, Ambassador of Sweden to Thailand. The meeting took place in Reception Room 205 at the Parliament Building and included Mr. Cholthani Chuenoi, President of the Thai-Swedish Parliamentary Friendship Group, along with other parliamentary representatives and officials.

During the meeting, the Parliament President greeted the Ambassador and acknowledged her extensive experience. In addition, he emphasized the deep-rooted relationship between Thailand and Sweden, which spans over 157 years and involves royal, governmental, and parliamentary ties. He notably highlighted visits from past Thai monarchs, including King Rama V, King Rama IX, and King Rama X, showcasing the strong bond between the two nations.

Free Trade Agreement

Furthermore, the discussions focused on enhancing economic, trade, and investment cooperation. The President pointed out the significant presence of major Swedish companies in Thailand, such as Volvo, IKEA, and Electrolux, which play a vital role in local employment. Consequently, he expressed optimism for a successful conclusion to the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries.

On the subject of defense, he mentioned Thailand’s procurement of Gripen E/F fighter jets from Sweden, thereby reinforcing military collaboration. Regarding tourism, he noted that nearly 200,000 Swedish tourists visit Thailand annually and about 10,000 Swedes reside there. He also invited the Speaker of the Swedish Parliament to visit Thailand to strengthen parliamentary relations further.

Ambassador Hammargren thanked President Matha and acknowledged the strong historical ties between the countries. She highlighted Sweden’s commitment to trade and investment, noting that over 120 Swedish companies operate in Thailand. Additionally, she discussed Sweden’s NATO membership application and welcomed Thailand’s enactment of the Marriage Equality Act, celebrating a significant milestone for LGBTQ+ rights in the country.
