Vietnamese and Danish architects and experts gathered in Hanoi on November 28, 2024. They met to exchange knowledge and strategies about urban green transition during a dialogue titled “Greener Together – Urban Green Transition – From Denmark to Vietnam.” The Embassy of Denmark in Vietnam, in collaboration with ASHUI Co. Ltd, organized the event at the historic Temple of Literature.

The dialogue focused on practical strategies. These strategies can help Vietnam integrate green infrastructure and sustainable practices into its urban planning. Additionally, the discussion emphasized the importance of collaboration among individuals, businesses, experts, and government entities. Such collaboration aims to accelerate the green transition in Vietnam. Participants discussed Danish practices and successful case studies from cities worldwide. They showcased effective solutions for tackling the challenges posed by rapid urbanization.

Moreover, attendees had the opportunity to visit the “Green Together” exhibition. This exhibition highlights Danish green solutions across various sectors. These include energy, water management, the circular economy, and the creation of sustainable, livable cities. Importantly, this exhibition will remain open to the public until December 2, 2024.

Green strategic partnership

Mette Ekeroth, the deputy head of mission at the Embassy of Denmark in Hanoi, addressed the participants. She stated that Vietnam and Denmark share a robust commitment to sustainable development within the framework of their Green Strategic Partnership. “We are very pleased to be Vietnam’s long-term friend and a strong supporter of the country’s impressive social and economic growth,” Ekeroth stated. “Our focus now is on ensuring that economic security goes hand in hand with social and environmental security.”

Vietnam’s rapid economic growth and urbanization have created serious challenges. These challenges include air pollution, traffic congestion, waste management issues, and climate resilience. According to Vietnam’s national urban and rural system planning for the 2021-2030 period, the urbanization rate is projected to exceed 50 percent by 2030.

As cities worldwide confront the pressing threat of climate change, the urban green transition emerges as a necessity—not a trend. This transition fosters livable, resilient, and sustainable environments for future generations. Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, ranks among the top three most sustainable and livable cities globally. It serves as an inspiring model for Vietnam in its journey toward urban sustainability.
