Danish Seamen’s Church in Hong Kong to Celebrate Fastelavn

The Danish Seamen’s Church in Hong Kong is inviting families and community members to celebrate Fastelavn on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at 11:00 AM in the Danish Room. This traditional Danish carnival marks the beginning of the Easter season and features a variety of fun activities for children and adults alike.

The event will begin with a short children’s church service, featuring songs and storytelling about the meaning of Fastelavn as a time of preparation before Easter. Traditionally, this period was followed by fasting, but before that, communities would gather for a festive celebration, including costumes and games.

After the service, attendees will move to the Danish Room, where a guest face-painting expert will be present to help children complete their costumes. One of the highlights of the event will be the traditional ‘slå katten af tønden’ (hitting the barrel), a Danish game similar to a piñata, where children take turns knocking down a decorated barrel to reveal treats inside. Following tradition, a kattekonge (cat king) and kattedronning (cat queen) will be crowned.

The celebration will also feature a delicious selection of Danish food, including frikadelle sandwiches, sausage rolls, and traditional Fastelavnsboller (Fastelavn buns).

Participation in the event is 50 HKD per person for everyone over one year old, and attendees are encouraged to register in advance.

For more details and registration, visit the Danish Seamen’s Church in Hong Kong’s website or contact the church directly.
