A giant transformer built in Sweden is now on its way to China after an unusual journey across Swedish roads, Ny Teknik reports.
The transformer, manufactured by Hitachi Energy at its factory in Ludvika, is one of the largest ever produced by the company. Weighing 446 tonnes, it is being transported on a 107-metre-long vehicle with a total weight of about 820 tonnes.
Because the load is too heavy for rail transport, the convoy moves slowly along the roads at speeds of around 5 km/h before reaching the port.
From there the transformer will be shipped via Sweden and loaded onto a vessel operated by Maersk for delivery to Shanghai in China.
The equipment will be used in the Gansu–Zhejiang transmission link, a 2,370-kilometre power transmission project designed to transport electricity generated from renewable energy sources across China.
