Norwegian Ambassador Kristian Netland has placed Filipino seafarers and maritime cooperation high on his agenda in the Philippines.
More than 25,000 Filipino seafarers work aboard Norwegian or Norwegian-controlled vessels, Netland said in an interview published by The Philippine Business and News on 17 September.
“We have a strong interest in the maritime industry,” Netland said, describing the sector as “very high on the agenda.”

Netland has also met Philippine Maritime Industry Authority administrator Sonia B. Malaluan.
They discussed digital seafarer certificates, electric ferries, ship decarbonisation, autonomous vessels and opportunities for women in the maritime sector.
The meeting added concrete priorities to the maritime cooperation mentioned when Netland presented his credentials to Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on 8 September.
Philippines seen as important partner
Netland also identified renewable energy, trade, investment and ocean issues as priorities. He said Norway would continue promoting Norwegian seafood in the Philippine market.
The ambassador described Norway and the Philippines as open economies, trading nations and maritime countries that depend on a rules-based international system.
“For Norway, the Philippines is definitely a partner that we need in the international sphere,” he said.
Netland previously served in Manila as first secretary and deputy head of mission. He returned to the Philippines in August to succeed Christian Halaas Lyster.
