Nordic diplomats have expressed alarm over China’s recent aggression in the West Philippine Sea, where the China Coast Guard (CCG) reportedly used water cannons and rammed a Philippine vessel near Scarborough Shoal on December 4.
The Danish ambassador to the Philippines, Franz-Michael Mellbin, took to social media, stating:
“Deeply concerned at China’s continued aggressive actions against Philippine vessels in the West Philippine Sea. China’s actions undermine the law of the sea, UNCLOS [United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea], and maritime safety.”
Similarly, Norway’s ambassador Christian Lyster emphasized the importance of peaceful dispute resolution.
“Norway is concerned by the latest incident involving Chinese and Philippine vessels. All disputes must be resolved peacefully and in accordance with international law. Respect for international law, [including Law of the Sea], is paramount,” he shared on X.
The incident has drawn condemnation from other countries, including South Korea, Japan, Canada, and the UK. Philippine authorities, meanwhile, continue to highlight the need for international support to uphold maritime safety and sovereignty in the contested waters.
The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs has also formally lodged a diplomatic protest against China.
