Nordic embassies issue urgent tsunami alerts following major earthquake in the Philippines

The Danish and Swedish Embassies in Manila have issued safety advisories after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in Davao Oriental triggered tsunami warnings across the southern Philippines.

Both the Danish and Swedish Embassies in Manila have issued safety advisories to their citizens following a magnitude 7.6 earthquake that struck offshore Davao Oriental in the southern Philippines on Friday morning.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has released a tsunami warning, urging the immediate evacuation of coastal communities in Eastern Samar, Dinagat Islands, Davao Oriental, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur. Authorities have warned of “life-threatening wave heights” and advised the public to stay clear of coastal areas.

The Embassy of Sweden relayed PHIVOLCS’ evacuation order, while the Danish Embassy urged Danish nationals in affected areas to stay alert for official instructions, aftershocks, and evacuation orders. Danes requiring emergency assistance were advised to contact local authorities, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), or Denmark’s Global Watch Center at +45 3392 1112.

Both embassies continue to monitor developments and coordinate with Philippine authorities as the situation unfolds.
