 plastic monitoring in Vietnam

Last week, Mrs. Mette Møglestue, Deputy Head of Mission at the Norwegian Embassy in Hanoi, participated in a field visit with scientists from the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) and the Vietnamese Institute of Marine Environment Research (IMER) in Hai Phong City. The mission focused on monitoring plastic pollution at the Cam River mouth. Furthermore plastic monitoring Vietnam.
This field visit forms part of the natural science component of the “ASEAN-Norway cooperation project on local capacity building for reducing plastic pollution in the ASEAN region,” also known as ASEANO Phase 2. This initiative, implemented by NIVA alongside the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), spans four years from 2023 to 2027, with Cambodia and Vietnam as the primary case study sites.

The ASEANO2 project aims to develop targeted and cost-effective measures for preventing and mitigating plastic pollution across ASEAN nations. It takes a multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral approach to address this pressing environmental issue.

During her visit, Mrs. Møglestue stated, “Norway prioritizes cooperation with Vietnam and other ASEAN countries in combatting plastic pollution. This global crisis requires regional efforts. Only by joining forces across borders, industries, and communities can we create lasting change and protect our planet for future generations.”

Collaboration

The collaboration emphasizes the importance of collective action in addressing plastic pollution, which poses significant threats to marine ecosystems and public health. By leveraging expertise from both Norway and Vietnam, the initiative seeks to create a sustainable framework for reducing plastic waste and enhancing local capacities.

As the world continues to grapple with the effects of plastic pollution, the ASEANO2 project stands as a beacon of hope for effective regional cooperation in environmental conservation. Norway’s commitment to this cause reinforces the global necessity of working together to create a cleaner, healthier planet for generations to come.
