Philippine authorities have rescued 18 minors in three separate operations as part of an intensified campaign against online child sexual abuse and trafficking.
According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), the operations were carried out on February 18 and 19 by its Women and Children Protection Center.
Norwegian national linked to investigation
The case includes a referral connected to the earlier arrest of a 50-year-old Norwegian national on charges related to possession of child sexual abuse materials. Police said an examination of his phone found online conversations, illegal material and money transfers linked to a local contact in Leyte, according to Philippines News Agency.
A Filipino woman was later arrested in Abuyog, Leyte in connection with the case.
Seven children were rescued in Leyte, one in Cagayan de Oro and ten in Batangas. All minors are now under the care of social welfare authorities for assessment and support.
The PNP said it is building cases against those involved and reaffirmed its commitment to combating online child exploitation.
