Construction has officially begun on Horizon X, a new generation ferry for Swedish operator Gotlandsbolaget, The Embassy of Sweden in Manila reports.

The vessel is being assembled at the shipyard of Austal in Cebu, Philippines.

The project places Filipino shipbuilders at the centre of one of Sweden’s most ambitious green maritime investments.

Horizon X is designed as a hydrogen-ready, multi-fuel high-speed ferry. It will be able to operate on different energy sources, preparing it for a future transition to cleaner fuels. The aim is to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency on Swedish ferry routes.

Sweden relies on sea transport due to its vast coastline and thousands of islands. Gotlandsbolaget operates key routes across the Baltic Sea, including services to the island of Gotland.
