Vietnam is pushing hard to become a global shipbuilding nation and Denmark could play a key role.

Under a new national strategy to 2030, with a vision to 2050, Vietnam aims to deliver up to 160 vessels annually and capture 2 percent of the global market, Embassy of Denmark in Vietnam reports. Massive investments in infrastructure, technology and workforce training are already underway.

Recent visits to major shipyards in northern Vietnam show clear progress. Larger and more advanced vessels are being designed and built locally. The country’s young and skilled workforce is ready to move up the value chain.

Vietnam is actively seeking partners who can contribute advanced maritime expertise, green transition solutions and decades of global industry experience. This is precisely where Denmark stands out.

Denmark is home to some of the world’s leading maritime companies, recognised for energy-efficient vessel design, digital solutions and high safety standards. Danish suppliers have long helped shipowners reduce fuel consumption and emissions, while optimising performance and lifecycle costs.

With Vietnam accelerating its ambitions, the foundation is being laid for a closer and more strategic Danish-Vietnamese partnership in shipbuilding.
