Swedish ambassador to Malaysia, Niklas Wiberg, has urged ASEAN to make progress on free trade agreements with the European Union in 2025. The ambassador highlighted the importance of regional projects, including the Laos–Thailand–Malaysia–Singapore (LTMS) energy initiative, as key examples of ASEAN’s growing economic cooperation.

According to a report by Free Malaysia Today, Wiberg stressed that strengthening ASEAN–EU ties through formal agreements would benefit both regions economically and strategically. He pointed to the LTMS power integration project as a demonstration of ASEAN’s readiness for deeper international partnerships.

The ambassador also noted that Sweden, as part of the EU, continues to support ASEAN’s regional development and sees enhanced trade relations as vital for long-term growth on both sides.
