The Swedish School of Textiles’ knitting technology lab in Borås, Sweden, is cooperating with Swedish-Chinese car maker Polestar, on interior textile for the Polestar 4 electric SUV coupe.
The Swedish School of Textile is one of the most well-resourced University labs in Europe for knitted textiles. The knitting laboratory often takes part in research and development projects, both nationally and internationally.
Polestar’s goal of creating a truly climate-neutral car by 2030, is one of the main reasons behind the collaboration.
“With Polestar 4 we have taken a fundamental new approach to SUV coupe design. Rather than simply modifying an existing SUV, we have designed Polestar 4 from the ground up,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO.
The tailored knit upholstery, created by Polestar designers and the Swedish School, is a relatively new technique for the car industry. The interior materials have been designed around the theme of ‘soft tech’. It is drawing inspiration from the fashion and sportswear industries and is made from 100 % recycled polyester.
