Swedish solar company Midsummer has signed an agreement with Indonesian technology company PT Metalogika Rekayasa Sistem to develop a solar cell manufacturing facility in Indonesia.
The planned factory will initially produce up to 20 MW of thin-film solar cells per year. The partners aim to eventually increase production to 200 MW per year.
Midsummer will provide the equipment and technology for the factory and will take a minority stake in the new Indonesian joint venture.
The solar cells will initially be made for the Indonesian market. In the longer term, the companies also hope to supply customers in other Southeast Asian markets.
Midsummer said the project could make Indonesia an important part of its international manufacturing network.
The project is not yet a completed factory. The companies still need to establish the joint venture, secure Indonesian approvals and incentives, arrange financing and finalise agreements on the equipment and technology.
Midsummer, which is based in Sweden, develops thin-film solar technology and equipment for manufacturing solar cells. Its technology produces lightweight and flexible solar cells that can be used in applications where traditional solar panels may be less suitable.
