The Embassy of Sweden in Yangon recently shared a significant health success story through its support in Myanmar. U Aung Aung, a carpenter from Hpapun, Karen State, Myanmar fully recovered from tuberculosis (TB) after receiving essential medical assistance.
Tuberculosis remains a major health issue in Myanmar, placing the country among the top 30 globally with the highest tuberculosis burden. Notably, TB acts as a highly infectious disease primarily affecting the lungs and poses deadly risks.
In 2023, U Aung Aung contracted tuberculosis and faced numerous challenges accessing healthcare due to inadequate facilities and ongoing armed conflict near his village by the Thailand border. As the family’s main breadwinner, he understandably worried about the impact of his illness on their livelihood.
Fortunately, his wife attended a health education session, recognized his symptoms, and urged him to seek help. Through the Access to Health Fund, supported by Sweden, U Aung Aung received a free chest X-ray and treatment from the Myanmar Health Assistant Association (MHAA). The association provided medical care and continuous support throughout his recovery journey.
Moreover, an MHAA volunteer regularly traveled by boat through flooded areas to visit U Aung Aung’s home, ensuring he adhered to his medication and attended necessary check-ups. Consequently, after six months of dedicated treatment, U Aung Aung regained his health.
“We can’t express how grateful we are for the support we received,” his wife shared, deeply appreciating the assistance provided.
Overall, this recovery story illustrates the positive impact of international cooperation in addressing health challenges in Myanmar, highlighting the vital role of initiatives like the Access to Health Fund.
