Thailand reconsiders 60-day visa-free stay after local complaints

Thailand’s caretaker government is reviewing the 60-day visa-free stay following mounting complaints from local tourism operators.

Thailand’s plan to cut visa-free stays from 60 to 30 days is now being reviewed again, Bangkok Post reports.

Foreign Affairs Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said the caretaker government is reassessing the 60-day scheme following complaints, particularly from Phuket.

Local tourism operators argue that the longer stay has allowed some foreigners to work or run businesses without proper permits. They also warn that easier long-term access is pushing up property prices.

No final decision has been announced. But the government has confirmed that the 60-day visa-free policy – and the planned reduction to 30 days – is under review.
