After a decade, Viking Boat Party returns to Bangkok

Around 100 Scandinavians and friends of the Nordics are expected to gather at Bangkok Island Pier on March 28 before setting sail on what organisers describe as a very Nordic social experience.

Fur capes, helmets and Nordic flags will once again take over the Chao Phraya River.

After a decade-long pause, the Viking Boat Party is making a comeback in Bangkok – this time as a full-day river adventure hosted by the Thai-Nordic Association.

No plundering or violence

But before anyone starts reaching for a sword: this is Viking-themed – not a real Viking conquest.

Although Vikings are often associated with old tales of plundering and violence, the event’s organiser and Secretary of the Thai-Nordic Association, Bo Lund Pedersen, assures participants that the Bangkok edition will be far more peaceful.

“There may be some old stories about looting and worse,” Bo says with a smile. “That is definitely not going to happen here.”

From the street to the river

The original Viking event, held about ten years ago, became known for Viking-decorated tuk-tuks cruising through Bangkok’s streets before the celebration continued on the river.

This year, the focus stays firmly on sailing – and on bringing the Nordic community together in a festive setting.

Bo Lund Pedersen, who has lived in Bangkok for ten years, did not attend the original event but is now a part of the team reviving the part. For him, the motivation is simple: bringing people together.

“There are months of planning behind a few hours of celebration,” says Pedersen. “For me, the best part is seeing guests enjoy something we’ve built from scratch.”

Hunt for Thor’s Hammer

The day begins with welcome drinks and Viking dress-up before teams cross the river to Bang Krachao for “The Hunt for Thor’s Hammer” – a treasure hunt designed to test teamwork and Nordic spirit.

Guests will then return for a beach-style buffet dinner before boarding the boat for a three-hour night cruise through Bangkok’s illuminated skyline, complete with DJ and Danish-Nordic live band.

Too many female vikings

Of the 100 available tickets, about 25 have already been sold. Organisers note with surprise that most early registrations have come from women.

“We might need a few more male Vikings to even out the crew,” he says.

The Viking Boat Party takes place on Saturday, March 28, from 16:00 to 23:00, departing from Bangkok Island Pier.

Tickets are available via the Thai-Nordic Association.
