A strengthening Norwegian krone could make trips to Norway more expensive for foreign visitors – including travellers from Asia.
The currency has gained significant ground in early 2026. According to Norwegian business daily E24, the krone has been among the best-performing major currencies so far this year.
This marks a shift from recent years, when the krone was historically weak. In 2023, Visit Norway stated that the weak currency made holidays in Norway cheaper for foreign travellers. At that time, one euro was worth around NOK 11.26 compared with NOK 7.48 in 2013.
When the krone strengthens, foreign currencies convert into fewer Norwegian kroner than during periods of weakness.
For Asian travellers, that means Norway may no longer feel like the currency bargain it was described as in 2023. If the current trend continues, visiting Norway could again become noticeably more expensive compared with the years of a historically weak krone.
