Volvo Opens tech hub in Singapore

Auto giant Volvo launched a new facility in Singapore on January 22 to support its goal of becoming a fully electric carmaker and a leader in technology. Specifically, the Volvo tech hub, which spans 9,423 square feet, includes a research and development lab as well as office space for engineers. Currently, it employs 15 people; however, there are plans for expansion.

This tech hub, conveniently located on Kallang Avenue, focuses on developing capabilities in areas such as robotics, electronics engineering, power electronics, artificial intelligence (AI), and data analytics. Consequently, these fields will support Volvo’s in-house technology and software development. “The Singapore hub will play a key role in our deep tech and advanced engineering development,” stated Dr. Yvonne Tan, head of the tech hub.

Moreover, Dr. Tan noted that this facility is unique for Volvo. While the company operates a software engineering center in Krakow, Poland, and an IT support hub in India, the Singapore location emphasizes advanced technology development. Additionally, Dr. Tan highlighted Singapore’s strong robotics talent pool, made possible by support from local startups and institutions.

During the opening ceremony, Cindy Koh, executive vice-president of the Economic Development Board, acknowledged the global challenges facing the automotive sector. She specifically mentioned the recent slowdown in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, despite a remarkable 60% increase in global EV sales in 2022.

Furthermore, Volvo’s sales in Singapore rose by 38% from 2023 to 2024, with EVs accounting for 58% of those sales. As Singapore aims to phase out internal combustion engine vehicles by 2040, the government actively supports EV adoption through incentives and expanded charging infrastructure.
