A passenger on Vietnam Airlines flight VN38 from Copenhagen to Ho Chi Minh City unexpectedly went into labour 10 hours into the flight on September 6. Five passengers and the flight crew assisted in delivering the baby, according to Vietnam.vn.
The passenger, a Vietnamese national identified only as NLDL, showed signs of labour while the plane was en route to Vietnam.
When the flight crew became aware of the situation, they immediately asked passengers with medical expertise for assistance and implemented emergency procedures.
Five passengers volunteered to assist the pregnant woman, and the baby was subsequently delivered on board the plane.
Following the delivery, the mother showed signs of an unstable medical condition, prompting the flight crew to divert the plane to Yangon International Airport in Myanmar.
Upon landing in Yangon, the mother and baby were taken to hospital for further monitoring and treatment.
The diversion temporarily interrupted flight VN38’s journey. After the necessary assistance procedures were completed, the flight departed Yangon at 3:30 a.m. local time on September 6 and landed safely at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City at 6:05 a.m. the same morning.
Vietnam Airlines advises passengers, especially those who are pregnant or have special health conditions, to assess their health before boarding a flight. If unusual symptoms occur, passengers should consult a doctor and consider whether they are fit to travel in order to minimise potential risks.
