A luxury condominium in Phuket became the scene of a high-profile arrest this week, when Thai police detained a Swedish man wanted under an international warrant, Phuket HotNews reports.
The operation took place on 9 April, after authorities tracked the suspect to a residence on the island following cooperation with international law enforcement partners.
Police say the man is wanted in Sweden on suspicion of murder, illegal weapons offences, and drug trafficking.
He is also alleged to have links to organised crime and is described by investigators as a leading member of a mafia-linked group involved in serious violent offences.
The arrest followed a notice issued through Interpol, prompting coordination between Swedish and Thai authorities.
The suspect is believed to be connected to a fatal shooting in the Årsta district of Stockholm.
He had entered Thailand earlier this year on a tourist visa via southern Thailand and later overstayed his permitted stay.
Police in Phuket say the arrest is part of a broader crackdown on foreign nationals suspected of using Thailand as a refuge while evading prosecution abroad.
After the arrest, he is expected to face charges for visa overstay before extradition proceedings to Sweden begin.
He will then be returned to Sweden to face legal proceedings related to the allegations against him.
