Chinese businessman linked to Gothenburg murders detained in China

A Chinese businessman, suspected of involvement in two murders in Gothenburg in 2003, has been detained in China.

The case revolves around the deaths of a woman and her neighbor in Högsbo, which occurred weeks apart. The woman’s husband was previously acquitted in Sweden but remains a suspect for allegedly ordering the murders.

Efforts to bring him to trial again have stalled for years. Prosecutor Ulrika Bentelius Egelrud confirmed his detention in China, but the charges there remain unclear.

The man was previously linked to his ex-wife’s 2013 murder in Thailand and served time in Sweden before being acquitted on appeal and leaving the country.

Authorities hope his detention will eventually lead to new legal proceedings in Sweden. “A fresh trial remains the long-term goal,” Bentelius Egelrud stated.
