The Danish Embassy in Indonesia has published its final update on three orangutans whose rehabilitation and lives it has followed as part of a biodiversity awareness initiative.
For more than a year, the embassy has shared the stories of Alexander, Isti and Otan in collaboration with the Danish organisation Save the Orangutan and Indonesia’s Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation.
Alexander is continuing to learn the skills needed for an independent life in the forest. The young orangutan remains in rehabilitation, where he practises activities such as climbing, finding food and building nests.
Isti continues to live on a sanctuary island, while Otan has ventured further into the forest, according to the embassy’s final update.
The initiative was created to draw attention to the protection of forests in Kalimantan and the continued rehabilitation of rescued orangutans.
“While this is our final update, their journeys are far from over,” the Danish Embassy wrote.
The embassy has used the three individual stories to highlight cooperation with Indonesian conservation organisations and the importance of protecting the forests on which orangutans and other species depend.
