Denmark is preparing to expand its maritime cooperation with the Philippines following a recent visit to Manila by the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA), which focused on finalising a new Strategic Sector Cooperation between the two countries.

During the visit, the Danish delegation held discussions with several Philippine government agencies, including the Department of Transportation, the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) and the Philippine Coast Guard.

The meetings focused on exchanging expertise and best practices, as well as strengthening public-private cooperation to support the development of the Philippine maritime industry.

Maersk involved in discussions
The Danish Maritime Authority also met with representatives of Maersk Filipinas to discuss the company’s approach to training and developing Filipino seafarers and maritime workers.

The involvement of Maersk highlights the commercial dimension of the cooperation, particularly the importance of skilled maritime workers to the international shipping industry.

The Philippines is one of the world’s major suppliers of seafarers, with Filipino maritime workers employed across international shipping fleets.

Focus on maritime safety and sustainability
According to the Danish Embassy in the Philippines, the upcoming Strategic Sector Cooperation is intended to strengthen collaboration on maritime safety, security and sustainability.

The programme will build on existing cooperation between the two countries and draw on Denmark’s experience in maritime regulation and industry development.

The Danish Maritime Authority’s visit is part of broader efforts to strengthen economic and maritime relations between Denmark and the Philippines, which are marking 80 years of diplomatic relations in 2026.

Further details about the programme and its implementation have not yet been announced.
