Drama in the fish pond: Russian cod could beat Norwegian salmon in China

Norway has cautioned that Russia’s plan to set its own Barents Sea cod quota and reduce the minimum catch size would be “incredibly dangerous” for stock management. The warning follows difficult quota talks and reflects concerns over bypassing long-standing joint arrangements.

At the same time, wholesale salmon prices in China have fallen in late October as arrivals increased, including Norwegian shipments into major hubs. Market trackers reported declines for head-on gutted fish around week 44.

For Nordic–Southeast Asia trade, softer China prices may influence Norwegian exporters’ margins and sales strategies across Asian markets, while any disruption to Barents cod management could tighten global whitefish supply and affect pricing. These developments were reported in industry market updates on Oct. 28, 2025.
