A Norwegian research project involving a Nio ES8 electric vehicle has raised questions about how connected Chinese cars handle data and communicate with external servers.
The study examined the Chinese electric SUV in an environment with limited connectivity and investigated the vehicle’s communications and data flows. The findings have renewed attention on the amount of information modern connected vehicles can exchange with manufacturers and other systems.
The case is relevant as Chinese electric vehicle brands expand internationally, including in European markets where data protection and vehicle cybersecurity are becoming increasingly important issues.
The Nio ES8 is equipped with a range of connected functions and sensors that can collect and transmit data as part of the vehicle’s digital systems.
The study does not by itself establish that Nio has breached data-protection rules or misused customer information. Rather, it highlights questions about where vehicle data is sent, what information is transmitted and how such communications are governed.
Further details from the original Norwegian research would be useful to establish the findings and methodology behind the study.
