Swedish truck manufacturer Scania has established a new unit in China to develop and test technologies and business models for heavy transport.
Scania announced Venture & New Business China on 17 September. The unit will initially focus on the energy transition and autonomous transport, working with Chinese customers, technology companies and other local partners.
The initiative will build on Scania’s existing operations in China, including its research and development activities and its industrial hub in Rugao, Jiangsu province.
The company opened the €2 billion Rugao facility in 2025, with approved capacity of up to 50,000 vehicles a year. Scania says the site can also support the development and testing of technologies for the Chinese market and selected export markets.
The move comes as Chinese truck manufacturers increasingly target European markets, putting pressure on established European manufacturers to accelerate the development and commercialisation of new technologies.
Scania has not disclosed the investment value or a timeline for specific projects under the new unit.
