A Swedish citizen has died while in custody in the Philippines after being arrested in connection with a drug smuggling case, according to Swedish authorities.
The woman, who also held Swiss citizenship, was detained at Manila’s international airport in September after authorities found around six kilograms of methamphetamine in her luggage, media reports said. She died in prison on 6 December.
Sweden’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs confirmed that a Swedish citizen in her seventies had died in the Philippines and said the woman’s relatives had been notified. No cause of death has been disclosed.
According to Swiss authorities, the woman had requested consular assistance from the Swedish Embassy in Manila, which provided support during her detention.
