In light of recent reports of methanol poisoning among tourists in Asia, including a tragic incident in November where six people died in Laos after consuming methanol-contaminated alcohol, Swedish influencer and seasoned backpacker Lovisa “Laki” Karlsson emphasizes the importance of safety during travel.
“It ruins the whole image of backpacking, and I fear that people will become scared,” said Laki. Despite her concerns, she encourages travelers to remain adventurous and take precautionary measures when planning their trips.
With extensive travel experience in Asia and South America, Laki has compiled essential tips for backpackers seeking to ensure their safety on the road. In her latest video, she shares advice on how to prepare for a secure travel experience.
Among her key recommendations, Laki emphasizes the importance of being cautious with drinks. “Never drink from the tap,” she advises, suggesting that travelers should always opt for bottled beverages that have not been opened prior to consumption.
Laki also mentions the necessity of vaccinations, suggesting travelers get only those required for the specific duration and region of their trip, while ensuring they have comprehensive travel insurance. “Print out your insurance papers in English and keep them handy,” she advised.
When packing, Laki encourages travelers to limit their load. “Don’t pack too much. You’ll want to buy things and carrying heavy bags can be a hassle,” she says. She suggests a minimalist approach with items like two t-shirts, a tank top, and a couple of pairs of shorts.
Regarding accommodations, she highlights the benefits of staying in hostels, where travelers can meet other backpackers while saving money. “Bring earplugs and a sleeping mask for better sleep,” she adds.
Laki also emphasizes the importance of keeping valuables secure. “Lock up clothes and personal items that aren’t of much value, but always carry your passport with you,” she notes.
In light of the methanol poisoning cases, she expresses hope that they do not deter others from exploring the world. “Don’t take things for granted. Always be cautious, but don’t let fear stop you from experiencing new adventures,” the Swedish influencer and seasoned backpacker concludes.
