Thai Defence Ministry backs Gripen jets over F-16s

The Thai Defence Ministry has endorsed the Royal Thai Air Force’s (RTAF) decision to purchase Swedish-made Gripen fighter jets over US-made F-16s, Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai announced.

The 19-billion-baht plan will add a new squadron to the RTAF fleet, which already includes both Gripen and F-16 jets. Mr. Phumtham praised the RTAF’s careful evaluation, saying, “They know best which jets suit our defense needs.”

While both aircraft perform similarly, the Gripen’s ability to take off and land on short runways—requiring as little as 400–500 meters—was highlighted as a key advantage. A highway test of this capability is scheduled for February.

Mr. Phumtham confirmed the purchase would proceed only if it stays within budget and includes technology transfer. The deal has been delayed for years due to budget constraints but is expected to be finalized this year.

The US had offered low-interest loans for F-16s, but Thailand declined.
