Vietnam has imported more than 24,000 metric tons of Norwegian salmon in the first ten months of 2024, establishing itself as one of Norway’s largest seafood markets in Southeast Asia. The impressive figures were revealed by Åshild Nakken, the regional director for Southeast Asia at the Norwegian Seafood Council, during a strategic partnership signing event with the restaurant chain operator Golden Gate Group in Ho Chi Minh City on November 27.
Nakken highlighted that Vietnam continues to be a critical market for Norwegian seafood products, with salmon, brown crabs, and king crabs being among the major offerings. The demand for various salmon types has seen a significant increase, particularly frozen salmon belly cuts, which are popular for sushi, alongside fresh salmon.
At the event, a chef showcased salmon preparation techniques and introduced Norwegian seafood specialties, reflecting the growing interest in high-quality Norwegian products among Vietnamese consumers.
In addition to the salmon imports, Vietnam consumed approximately 350 metric tons of brown and king crabs during the same period, with Norway supplying 54 percent of this demand. Norway has captured a dominant position in Vietnam’s brown crab market, boasting a remarkable 76 percent market share.
Nakken reaffirmed Norway’s commitment to delivering high-quality and sustainable seafood to the Vietnamese market. She emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships with local stakeholders to ensure mutual long-term benefits. The successful collaboration and increasing seafood imports signal a promising future for Norwegian seafood in Vietnam.
