Following the volcanic eruption of Lewotobi reported monday, a significant development has emerged. Indonesia is now working urgently to evacuate approximately 16,086 individuals who live in eight vulnerable villages near the Lewotobi Laki-laki volcano. This volcanic eruption, which occurred on Sunday evening, tragically resulted in the deaths of at least nine people and caused extensive damage to thousands of homes.
In a coordinated effort, military and police forces have mobilized to assist with the evacuations. They emphasize the need to ensure safety as volcanic activity continues to pose threats. Heronimus Lamawuran, the spokesperson for the local government, explained that officials have encountered challenges while trying to evacuate residents. Thick volcanic ash has covered several roads, making access difficult. “We plan to temporarily relocate residents until it is safe for them to return to their villages,” Lamawuran stated.
As of Tuesday morning, rescue teams successfully evacuated around 2,472 residents. These evacuees are now receiving temporary housing in schools and other facilities located farther away from the volcano’s danger zone. The government is committed to working diligently to ensure that all at-risk individuals receive the assistance they need.
Due to the ongoing eruption, local authorities advise tourists in the vicinity of Flores Island to wear masks in order to protect themselves from inhaling harmful ash and volcanic gases. The region remains under a Level 4 alert, which represents the highest warning level signaling imminent danger.
The recent volcanic activity not only led to fatalities but also caused injuries to 63 individuals. Authorities report damage to approximately 2,384 homes and 25 schools. In response to the unfolding disaster, local officials have activated a 58-day emergency response plan aimed at providing immediate assistance and support to affected communities.
