Tourists advised to wear masks after Lewotobi Volcano erupts, killing 6 locals

Lewotobi Volcano Eruption

Authorities advise tourists near Flores Island to wear masks following the Lewotobi volcano eruption that resulted in the deaths of six local residents. The active Lewotobi volcano erupted during the night of Monday at around 00:30 AM Indonesian time.

Local officials reported that witnesses saw a family of six become trapped under debris during the eruption. Consequently, residents from surrounding villages fled to seek safety.

Authorities conducted evacuations and emphasized the need for caution. The island remains under a Level 4 alert, the highest warning level. Officials stress that both locals and visitors should protect themselves from ash and hazardous volcanic gases, which pose serious health risks.

News agencies shared footage showing nearby villages covered in thick ash, with reports of fires in the area. Tourists must avoid affected locations and remain vigilant as volcanic activity persists.

The Lewotobi volcano consists of two peaks: Lewotobi Laki-laki and Lewotobi Perempuan. The recent eruption occurred at the Laki-laki peak. Flores lies approximately 500 kilometers east of Bali, a well-known tourist destination.

The Indonesian disaster management agency, BNPB, reported multiple eruptions overnight, leading to the fatalities. Given that Flores is situated in the “Ring of Fire” region, known for its seismic activity, ongoing vigilance is essential for both local residents and tourists alike
