Authorities in Laos are warning the public about thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds and a risk of hail in some areas.

According to Xinhua, citing the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are expected in some areas, with a risk of hail in certain locations as unstable weather continues.

Storm caused major damage in Vientiane

The warning comes after a recent hailstorm hit the Sikhottabong district in Vientiane.

A total of 17 villages were affected, with more than 5,000 homes damaged. Schools, temples and other buildings were also hit, and 53 vehicles were damaged. Nine people were injured.

Help being provided

Authorities say emergency support is now being provided to families affected by the storm.

President Thongloun Sisoulith has visited the area and suggested helping families by not charging them for electricity and water for three months.
