Behind the bright beer billboards of Cambodia lies a far more complex story, Screen Daily reports.

A new Danish documentary, Cambodian Beer Dreams, is set to have its world premiere at CPH:DOX in Copenhagen next month. The film is directed by Danish filmmaker Laurits Nansen and explores the rapid growth of Cambodia’s beer industry – and the human consequences behind it.

Set in Cambodia, the documentary follows the fierce marketing battle between beer brands competing for dominance in a booming market. At the same time, it portrays an activist working to reintroduce a long-abandoned national alcohol law, and ordinary Cambodians who see the beer business as a path to a better life.

Through these parallel stories, the film raises wider questions about capitalism, regulation and the impact of powerful industries on everyday people.

The film is produced by Danish company Hansen & Pedersen with backing from the Danish Film Institute and DR. Paris-based sales company CAT&Docs has taken on world sales rights, signalling international interest.
