Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam has announced plans for Ericsson and universities in Sweden and Singapore to collaborate on positioning technology using artificial intelligence and 6G.
Speaking at Stockholm’s Royal Palace on 19 October, Tharman said Ericsson, Sweden’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University would work together on the technology.
The cooperation will focus on next-generation positioning technologies using AI and 6G, the next generation of mobile networks.
Tharman also said the two governments would conclude a joint declaration covering emerging technologies, including quantum technology. His statement did not say the declaration had already been signed.
As ScandAsia previously reported, the president’s programme includes visits to Ericsson, Spotify and Volvo. The state visit marks 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Energy options under consideration
Beyond technology, Singapore’s Energy Market Authority and Sweden’s Ministry of Climate and Enterprise are exploring further energy cooperation.
Options include low-carbon electricity generation through the direct combustion of ammonia. Tharman described this as a potential world first if found feasible. The proposal remains under investigation.
Meanwhile, the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy will strengthen partnerships with KTH and the Stockholm School of Economics. These links are intended to create more opportunities for research and academic exchanges.
