Veera Kaarela is leaving her position as Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Finland in Manila after three years in the Philippines.

The embassy announced her departure in a farewell message and highlighted her contribution to its work and workplace culture.

Kaarela will now attend the European Union Diplomatic Academy in Belgium. The academy trains diplomats from EU member states and EU institutions in European foreign and security policy.

The European External Action Service manages the programme, which the College of Europe runs in Bruges. It combines academic teaching with practical diplomatic training.

Before joining the embassy in Manila, Kaarela worked with security policy and NATO affairs at Finland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

The embassy has not yet announced who will succeed her as Deputy Head of Mission.
