The Danish shipping company, Maersk, has confirmed a fire incident on board the Marie Maersk, a Danish-flagged container ship en route to Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas.

The vessel was operating on its way from Rotterdam to Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia when smoke was detected from containers on deck on 13 August 2025 off the coast of Liberia.

The crew activated firefighting systems, and the vessel remains in stable condition with all machinery and navigation systems operational. Two tugboats with firefighting equipment reached the ship the same evening, and the vessel has been diverted toward the West African shore for additional support.

Maersk, which holds a 30 percent stake in the Port of Tanjung Pelepas through APM Terminals, said it remains in constant contact with the crew and is providing full assistance.
