Norway sees opportunities to expand cooperation with the Philippines in offshore wind energy, floating solar and electric ferries, Norwegian Ambassador Kristian Netland told Philippine newspaper BusinessMirror in an interview published on 28 October.
Netland said Norway could share its experience in renewable energy and cleaner maritime transport as the Philippines seeks to strengthen energy security and reduce emissions.
He highlighted the potential for electric ferries and low-emission shipping in Metro Manila and on inter-island routes. A recent Philippine delegation visit to Norway also provided an opportunity to study electric ferry systems and low-emission maritime transport.
Maritime cooperation is an established part of relations between the two countries, including through Norwegian shipping companies and the training of Filipino seafarers at the Norwegian Training Center in Manila.
Netland also identified trade and investment as priorities, pointing to opportunities in renewable energy, seafood, agriculture and environmental technology. The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the Philippines have had a free trade agreement in place since 2018.
The ambassador further confirmed Norway’s continued support for peacebuilding in Mindanao, including efforts to support the decommissioning of former combatants and strengthen the participation of women and young people.
The interview outlined potential areas for cooperation but did not announce a new investment or agreement.
