Norway’s Halten Bulk has signed a contract with Chinese yard Jiangsu SOHO Marine Heavy Industry to build two 7,100 DWT bulk carriers, with options for two more, according to The Norwegian Ship Design Company.

The vessels are part of the company’s fleet renewal and will be built under the “Powered by Nature” concept, developed in cooperation with The Norwegian Ship Design Company.

Low-emission technology

The ships will be equipped with rotor sails and a hybrid-electric propulsion system including a shaft generator and battery pack. They will also feature electric excavators and other energy-efficiency measures aimed at reducing emissions.

“This is a major day for the company as we now replace older tonnage with new low-emission vessels,” said Managing Director Ivar Ulvan.

The vessels are expected to operate mainly along the Norwegian coast and in Northern Europe.
